What do you love most about overland travel?
I love to find a home, a building, a school house, take a photo of it and wonder what the lives of the people who live, work, study there like? what do they do? what did they have for lunch? are they are they an only child or do they have 5 sisters? are they married to their high school sweet heart? do they have a dog? who lived there before them, and what were their lives like? these places are filled with the lives of the people before us, we are just really passing guests though them.
Which of the Sundowners Overland destinations fascinates you most?
Mongolia, it is my dream to sleep in a Ger, wake up early and go out horse riding in the snowy fields, nothing would make me more happy then listen to the silence in such a wondrous landscape.
Give us your best tip for travelling on Sundowners Overland journeys.
Wear comfortable shoes, keep your sense of humor, if you don't laugh, you cry! Always go with your gut instinct! Try all the food and maybe don't ask what kind of meat it is... enjoy not having wi-fi all the time, and cease the moment. Smile.
What is your most memorable travel experience?
There are so many, but Seeing the Northern Lights with my mum in Iceland, was pretty special, we hunted for them for nights, and then on the last night there they were peaking out. Then there's the memory of driving across the Bayous overpasses to get to New Orleans and sleeping in a Swag in the desert in Western Australia under a blanket of unknown stars.
Which Sundowners Overland journeys are on your wish list?
Any of the Silk Road trips. My Parents met on the Silk rd, well my mum picked my dad up in her VW camper van on the Silk Road and they travelled on it together; so for me it holds a very special place in my heart. I think of it as a place untouched by time, where there is no wi-fi and a week's worth of shopping is done at the street bazaar and markets, not in a superstore. Food is taken seriously and family is of the utmost importance, I am in love with all these things.
What is your favourite season to travel?
I am winter person and right now I am having a love affair with Scandinavian Baking, so any excuse to go there and be in the cold all wrapped up, travel by snow train, ski, bake cakes, dog sledge and knit makes me happy.
